Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad and his team completed a two-day visit to Kabul as part of continuing efforts to try to accelerate the peace process and make progress toward a political settlement and a permanent ceasefire.
Ambassador Khalilzad met with President Ghani, HCNR Chair Abdullah, and a wide range of other political leaders, as well as advocates of women’s rights—all of whom are critical to advancing the peace process.
Ambassador Khalilzad also participated in roundtables with civil society leaders to discuss preserving the achievements of the last 20 years as part of advancing the peace process. In his discussions, Ambassador Khalilzad asserted the important role of political parties, civil society, and media in the peace process, to help Afghans realize a just and durable peace.
