U.S. Embassy Kabul Special Chargé d’Affaires Ambassador Hugo Llorens Visits Herat

Herat — U.S. Embassy Kabul Special Chargé d’Affaires Ambassador Hugo Llorens visited Herat today, where he met with Acting Provincial Governor Brigadier General Mohammad Jumma Adil, Acting Herat City Mayor Ghulam Ghaws Nikbeen, Provincial Chief of Police Brigadier General Mohammad Ayoub Ansari, NATO Commander in Herat Brigadier General Massimo Biagini, and leaders from the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF).  He also met with local business leaders and university students, who shared their perspectives on Herat’s recent economic and educational development.

During the meetings, Ambassador Llorens highlighted the ongoing partnership between Afghanistan, the United States, and the NATO coalition to support a safe, stable, and prosperous Afghanistan.  Ambassador Llorens cited the gains made during the past decade in Afghanistan in a number of sectors, while stressing the continued efforts at eliminating extremist groups and their influence.

“The United States and our NATO partners stand together with the people of Afghanistan,” Llorens said.  “We support our Afghan military and police partners, who are leading the fight against extremist violence, as well as our many civilian partners, who are building Afghanistan’s economy and shaping the next generation’s leaders.  I am impressed with the vitality of Herat and its leadership.”

The United States and the NATO coalition support a number of economic and development projects in Herat aimed at empowering civil society, economic development, and security.  The programs focus on anti-corruption, counternarcotics, agriculture, health, education, and good governance.
