Statement by U.S. Embassy Kabul’s Chargé d’Affaires Ambassador Hugo Llorens on Terrorist Attack in Kabul, Afghanistan

February 8, 2017

The U.S. Embassy strongly condemns yesterday’s deadly attacks at the Afghan Supreme Court in Kabul that killed at least 21 innocent Afghans and wounded more than 40. This was an attack on the very foundation of Afghan democracy and the rule of law. The terrorists who committed this dastardly act have no regard for human life and a flagrant hatred of a democratic system of justice.

We extend our deepest heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the victims of this senseless and cowardly act, and we commend the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces for their rapid response.

We believe Afghanistan deserves peace and security — not deliberate and murderous attacks that victimize innocent Afghans who serve their fellow citizens. My government and the people of the United States are and will remain committed to standing with the people of Afghanistan and its elected representatives in their fight against terrorism and in working toward a peaceful and prosperous future supported by justice and the rule of law. We stand with the Government of National Unity and people of Afghanistan in bringing an end to these barbarous attacks against its people.
