Statement on the Visit to Afghanistan by Ambassador Khalilzad

U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad visited Kabul on May 20.  He met with President Ashraf Ghani, Chairman of the High Council for National Reconciliation Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, and other officials.  Ambassador Khalilzad congratulated both leaders on reaching an agreement on a new administration following a lengthy period of negotiations.

Ambassador Khalilzad discussed ongoing efforts to advance the Afghan peace process, including the need to reduce violence by all sides, as well as release prisoners.  Ambassador Khalilzad also underscored the U.S. view that the best path to peace is for all parties to sit together to negotiate an agreement on the political future of Afghanistan in intra-Afghan negotiations as soon as possible.
