Statement on the Visit to Afghanistan by Ambassador Khalilzad

(KABUL, Afghanistan) – U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad visited Kabul on June 10. He met with President Ashraf Ghani, Chairman of the High Council for National Reconciliation Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, and other officials. They were also joined by former President Hamid Karzai.

Ambassador Khalilzad discussed the practical steps necessary for the start of intra-Afghan negotiations, a key objective of U.S. diplomatic efforts. In addition, Ambassador Khalilzad emphasized the importance of maintaining progress on accelerated prisoner releases and preventing any actions from undermining the peace process. He also provided updates on regional and international efforts in support of intra-Afghan negotiations.
