Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation (SRAR) Zalmay Khalilzad, led a delegation including representatives from the National Security Council (NSC), the Department of Defense, and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) concluded a four-day visit to Kabul on Tuesday.
The delegation included USAID Acting Assistant Administrator for Asia Karen Freeman, NSC Deputy Senior Director Mike Adler, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Rebecca Zimmerman, and Deputy SRAR Tom West. The U.S. team met with President Ghani, High Council for National Reconciliation Chairperson Abdullah, and other senior political and security leaders.
The U.S. inter-agency team reaffirmed America’s commitment to an enduring partnership with Afghanistan and the Afghan people, including through security and civilian assistance, and they consulted Afghan leaders regarding the transition underway in our cooperation. The two sides affirmed that they would continue robust diplomatic efforts in support of peace, and they agreed that maintaining political unity was essential during this period of transition.
Ambassador Khalilzad also met with civil society leaders to discuss America’s commitment to supporting the gains of the past twenty years, including gains made by women, girls, and minorities.
