Ambassador Hugo Llorens’ Statement on Kabul Imam Zaman Mosque Attack

On behalf of the United States of America, I condemn the evil and depraved attacks against worshippers at the Imam Zaman Mosque in Kabul yesterday afternoon.  My colleagues at the Embassy and I send our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those killed and injured.

The United States has a great respect for the Hazara community and their resilience in the face of these horrific attacks.  attacks against these Afghans because of their ethnicity and religious beliefs cannot continue.  The Hazaras are a vital piece of the beautiful tapestry of Afghan society, and the ill-founded attempts to kill and terrorize any group based on their ethnic or religious differences diminishes the greatness of the Afghan people.

This latest in a string of merciless attacks on places of worship in Afghanistan shows the nihilistic and wicked intent of extremist forces in this country.  We commend the government and security forces of Afghanistan for their swift response to this latest act of cowardly violence.

We will work closely with the National Unity Government to investigate these attacks, and to root out the perpetrators of these inhumane acts.  The Afghan National Defense and Security Forces are working closely with the United States and its allies to hunt down, target, and wipe ISIS and its adherents from their last hovel in Afghanistan.  We will not rest until we obliterate their presence from Afghanistan and erase even the memory of ISIS from the region.

The United States commends all Afghans in their pursuit of peace, security, and prosperity for their country and a future for Afghanistan free of sectarian violence.
